Taking a high-speed train in China
The preparation starts with the station name. A city may have several railway stations, so check the one on your booking before arranging the journey there.
Before you book
Compare the full journey, including travel to and from the stations. Check departure times, ticket conditions and passenger-document requirements with your booking provider. Enter passport details carefully and use the correct document for each traveller.
China Railway 12306 is the railway's own booking reference. If you use another booking service, check its fees, change rules and support arrangements as well.
Save these details together
- Departure and arrival stations in English and Chinese.
- Travel date, train number and departure time.
- Carriage, seat and any check-in instructions.
- Booking confirmation and the passport used to book.
For example, 上海虹桥站 means Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station. Use the exact station on your own ticket.
At the station
Follow the railway's guidance on when to arrive. Allow time for the station entrance, document checks, security and finding the boarding area. Keep your passport and booking details ready to show staff.
If a gate or boarding detail changes, follow the station's current information and ask staff if you are unsure.
