Paying for things in China
Alipay and WeChat Pay are widely used for everyday purchases. Set up the methods available to you before departure and keep a physical card and some RMB cash as alternatives.
Before you leave
- Install the apps you plan to use and confirm you can sign in.
- Check current international-card support and identity requirements in each app.
- Add a supported card and complete the requested checks.
- Find the merchant-payment screen and any help information you may need.
- Check overseas-use settings and contact details with your bank.
Successful setup does not guarantee that every transaction will work. Card support, transaction limits, fees and merchant acceptance can vary.
Know which payment you're making
Paying a merchant is different from transferring money to an individual. International-card access to one feature does not mean all transfer or wallet functions are available. Check the app's instructions for the transaction you want to make.
Cards and cash
Ask hotels and other providers which cards or payment methods they accept, especially for deposits. For day-to-day spending, carry a backup that doesn't rely on the same app or account.
If a payment is declined
Read the error message and check your connection. Ask the merchant which alternative they accept, then try another available method. For account restrictions, card declines or fees, contact the payment provider or your bank.
